So grab your paintbrush (or hammer and nails) and let's get started!

Here are 4 DIY Wall Design Ideas that you can consider for your empty walls:

  1. Organic Gallery Walls

  2. Grid Style Gallery Walls

  3. Statement With Big Art

  4. Floating Art Shelves

Let's start with the 1st one on our list...

Create an Organic Gallery Wall

This type of wall brings an eclectic and artistic atmosphere to any space. While I love minimalist neutral design, I also can not stop admiring the creativity, aesthetics, and flexibility of an eclectic gallery wall.

  • Designing spaces is about being intentional. Start by deciding on a wall size. Generally, the bigger the wall, the more art you can display. Make sure to measure carefully before shopping for artwork and frames so that your gallery looks balanced when complete.

  • Then decide on a color palette and a vibe/style. But mix different sizes and materials while keeping a rhythm and some repeat.

  • Add art that speaks to you while complementing them with mirrors or objects. Some vintage hunting and Etsy shopping will help! I had many vintage finds like small framed stamps and portraits of women.

  • Lay them on the floor to design and decide the main placement. Then start with an anchor piece. Keep it flowing, it can reach even to the floor if you want an impactful accent wall. This had evolved over a year!

  • Start hanging some at a good level so that all pieces line up with each other properly, the goal being asymmetrical balance instead of symmetrical spacing. And then start building around it. Remember you can even go all the way to the floor!

  • You don’t need to concern yourself with exact measurements as long as all pieces feel connected by their overall arrangement instead of looking like separate entities alone on the wall. As a rule of thumb, you can leave around 2" between the frames.

For our home office in our sunroom, my mission was to create an interesting visual story by bringing different styles under a cohesive color palette. Mixing old and new... I kept on extending the boundaries of the gallery.

Elevate Your Esthetic With Grid Style Gallery Wall

A grid-style gallery wall offers an esthetically pleasing way to elevate the look and feel of any space. To get started, you’ll need your art and frames as well as a few simple tools such as a small measuring tape, a level, pencils, and a hammer.

  • To start, choose how many rows and columns of frames you’d like to create for your wall. You can use the same size frame for an all-around uniform look or mix it up with some variation in size.

  • Mark the wall lightly with your pencil at the locations where you would like each frame to hang. This is also where a level comes in especially handy!

  • Next, measure between each frame and mark it on the wall as this will help you keep things even when you hang everything.

  • Finally, use double-sided tape or light adhesive strips to secure your art before placing them into their frames.

Here are two of my favorite inexpensive frames I used in my designs work:

And, you can always add a wireless art light! Shared more on that new trend alert HERE

Make a Statement With Big Art

Making a statement with big art can be intimidating but it doesn't have to be.

A bigger canvas like a 24"x36", or even something bigger will add some drama to your space. To make sure your artwork stands out, here are some tips:

  • Pick art that is cohesive with your color palette: When you're looking for a large piece of art, try to find something with colors that complement the other colors in the room. You don't have to match exactly, but having too many colors in one room can be overwhelming.

  • Match it to the furniture in the room: A large artwork can tie together different pieces of furniture in one room by using a style that is similar or complementary. This will create a cohesive look throughout your space and help you create bold visual statements with minimal effort!

  • Hang above eye level: When hanging art on the wall, create an esthetic by following this rule: hang your art above eye level. It will draw attention upwards and add an air of sophistication to any room!

Display Your Collections on Floating Shelves

Floating shelves can be a great way to transform any wall from an eyesore to an eye-catcher. On top of the Arts and Family Pics, you can use them to show off your gorgeous collections of hardcovers, succulents, sculptures, and other objects.

Here are some tips for designing your own floating shelves:

  • Measure Up: Before you start installing, measure the wall space you have available and make sure the width of your floating shelf is not too wide for your wall otherwise it will look disproportionate and out of place.

  • Layout & Leveling: It’s important to lay out all the pieces before attaching them, including positioning the brackets directly on the wall, where they will eventually be placed. Once everything is lined up, use a spirit level to ensure that each shelf is lined up correctly with those below it.

  • Finishing Touches: First add big frames and art, then layer it with smaller one. Finally, Add the final touches, add some small decor pieces, and sit back and admire your masterful work.

In the end, designing your wall doesn't have to be a difficult task.

Get creative, have fun with it, and be open to any challenge presented during the process. With these simple steps finding your theme, choosing the right artwork and accent pieces, planning out your layout, and installing your design you'll have your perfect wall design up and ready to go in no time!

Don’t be afraid to get creative and think outside the box.

There are endless possibilities when it comes to designing your wall and making it truly unique.
