Project Manay Spotlight
Hello hello,
I was a little delayed in sharing this one. But better late than EVER!
Here we are; Let's talk about how to add texture and movement to your space by adding feature walls!
Taking risks and creating interesting unique moody spaces via trying textured wall paint applications like Limewash will bring designer touch to your room.
As a designer, I'm all about adding unexpected touches to a room to give it character and charm. In Project Manay, we kicked things off with a home office makeover in the basement. And then we expanded into all basement renovation.
The starting point of the basement was cold, mono color gray, and less intentional. While we kept the gray we added warmth by selecting the right gray color (in this case brown undertone) and adding color contrasts to add dynamism.
Let me focus on the walls for now, and maybe draft another post on how I designed the Moody Newyork Lounge-style
The design journey started with a cold beige and monotone room (below on the left) to transformed into a moody, interesting, inviting basement home office (on the right). Shall we unpack a little?
What was the brief?
The client's only request was a New York mural on one of the walls.
That got me thinking about the vibe we wanted to create. Since the room was going to be used by both the client's husband and son, I proposed two options: a masculine loft style or a Soho House library vibe.
The loft style option featured exposed brick, giving it that quintessential New York feel. On the other hand, the Soho House library style option showcased textured limewash gray walls for an elegant, moody look. After some deliberation, the client fell in love with the NY Library Style, embracing its textured feel and sophisticated ambiance.
I have been wanting to design moody interiors for a while, so this was a dream come true! Below is the design board we worked on, which was all about elegance and depth. So she was excited to explore this interesting texture with me. That was a good relief.
There is a new design trend called "Country Club Grandpa Aesthetics", in this case, it was the modernized version of it and that is for another blog post to unpack.
Like this 3D vision, we designed below. It always helps to say YES to crazy ideas like painting the basement even darker grey, or a textured limewash, or painting the ceiling black.
Okay... Now, let's dive into those textured lime-wash walls application details.
Which product and color are used?
So limewash was something I've been itching to try in my projects, and after some research, I found Gustavo and his team. They came highly recommended and made the process a breeze.
For the paint, I had my eye on Bauwerk, a European company known for its natural lime paint.
After sifting through countless sample cards, we settled on Seed Pod, a shade with rich brown undertones that added depth and tied in beautifully with the floors and arm chairs.
How many coats were needed?
Maybe the most asked question is "How many coats are needed to come to this tone".
Let's talk about the process.
Applying the lime wash was quite the adventure! We used a combination of brushes and sponges to create movement and applied five coats to ensure the color popped.
That means that you need to trust the process! Yep, the process might seem a little worrying, though I didn't because we did a lot of research.
So here I am posting some progress pictures for you to feel comfortable about yours. You are welcome :)
As you can see while it is drying it might look uneven, but it all worked out. In this case, we used hair dryers to fasten the process and applied all coats in 5-6 hours.
As the paint dried, it went from looking dark and mysterious to soft and cloud-like, adding an organic and textured vibe to the space.
Our client was thrilled with the outcome and even wants to use the same color in her other home office for a killer Zoom background.
I love the look, and I'm already thinking about where else I can incorporate textured walls in future projects.
Be sure to stay tuned for more design adventures! And for the full re-cap of the Project Manay moody basement makeover progress!
Yep, it is coming along so nicely.
Love,
Burju
